Audiophile FireWire отличается от своего PCI-собрата хотя бы тем, что карта имеет 4, а не 2 аналоговых выхода с интерфейсом RCA. На задней панели также имеются: 2 RCA входа, 2 S/PDIF входа/выхода, MIDI-коннекторы для прямого подключения синтезаторов и другой медийной аппаратуры. Карта является прямым конкурентом Terratec Aureon 7.1 FireWire. Оба устройства относятся примерно к одной ценовой категории (Aureon 7.1 подороже, в частности, из-за поддержки 7.1 канального звука), оба подключаются посредством FireWire и оба имеют богатые возможности аналоговой коммутации.

На передней панели расположен 6,3-мм выход TRS (кстати, с усилителем) для наушников с отдельной ручкой регулятора громкости и кнопкой-переключателем источника звукового сигнала.

Второй регулятор может изменять те или иные аудиопараметры (например, уровень чувствительности для микрофона) в зависимости от программных настроек, сделанных пользователем. Спереди также расположены два индикатора, включающиеся при работе с интерфейсом S/PDIF, и кнопка включения/выключения устройства. Питание может осуществляться как от FireWire, так и от внешнего БП, который поставляется в комплекте, так что проблем из-за нехватки энергии, как иногда бывает в случае с E-MU 0202 USB 2.0, здесь нет.

Если судить о качестве звука, то перед нами одна из лучших внешних аудиокарт, присутствующих на данный момент на рынке. Ценителей безупречного качества порадует низкий уровень нелинейных и гармонических искажений. Объективно карта дает достаточно чистый и детальный звук как в 24-битном, так и в 16-битном режимах. Профессионалы могут придраться лишь к недостаточно активной атаке высоких частот при воспроизведении некоторых оркестровых музыкальных инструментов. Есть немало меломанов, которым не нужна многоканальная акустика, и которые не хотят переплачивать за изысканный дизайн, дополнительные шнуры, переходники и коммерческий софт в комплекте. Они-то и порадуются приобретению Audiophile FireWire.

Результаты тестирования внешних звуковых карт (24 бит, 44 кГц). Характеристики получены на основе тестирования программой RightMark Audio Analyzer 6.0.5 (RMMA) с помощью звуковой карты профессионального уровня E-MU EmulatorX.
