it should be well lapped near the cutting edge. In this lapping process, be sure to keep the face of the blade fl at; otherwise, you could gouge the face of the blade or create an unintentional back bevel. When you have the back well lapped, polish it on a 4000 or 8000 grit stone. -

Step 3: Setting the Registration Jig The registration jig ensures your blade is centered and squared in the blade carrier and sets the blade projection for the desired bevel angle. Slide the registration jig onto the dovetail feature along the front of the blade carrier. Set the registration jig such that the pointer on the top jaw of the jig aligns with the approximate width of your blade on the scale on the top of the blade carrier (see Figure 4). -
Page 5
Step 4: Installing the Blade For reliable results, the blade must be properly installed in the guide. Loosen the two blade clamp knobs on the blade carrier. Open the clamp bar wide enough to slide the blade in. The knobs must be loosened and tightened in small increments. -
Page 6
Step 6: Honing the Micro-Bevel One of the features of the honing guide is that the blade can be quickly and easily honed to a razor-sharp edge by adding a micro-bevel (or secondary bevel) to the primary bevel. A smooth micro-bevel on the blade produces the same result as honing the complete bevel, since only the cutting edge itself has any effect when cutting. -

This Veritas
Mk.II Honing Guide is an all-in-one system for sharpening
edge-cutting tools. The great advantage of this system is that it has everything you
need to precisely set primary bevel angles for high-angle and standard-angle blades,
as well as back bevels. The ranges are numbered and color-coded for clarity and
ease of use. The registration jig not only squares the blade in the carrier, but also
sets the appropriate blade projection for the desired bevel angle. It lets you sharpen
consistently to the same result or make a controlled change, as desired. This not only
makes tool sharpening on bench stones and surface plates faster, but also reduces the
wear caused by needless reshaping of edges.
This honing guide can be used to sharpen fl at or tapered blades up to 2

Our eccentric roller makes it easy to create a micro-bevel without resetting the
blade in the guide.
The main components are die-cast zinc/aluminum alloy and the other parts are all
precision machined from brass or steel for durability and accuracy.
Note: Before using the honing guide, apply a drop of oil to the junction of the roller,
as shown in Figure 15.

Step 1: Lapping
Since a sharp edge is basically the meeting point of two smooth surfaces, the fi rst
thing to ensure is that the face or bottom of any blade is perfectly smooth in the area
near the cutting edge before you attempt to hone the bevel.
An easy way to lap a new blade is on a water stone of 800 or 1000 grit; only on a
very wide blade would you have to resort to a coarser stone such as 250 grit. It need
not be lapped fl at along the entire face, particularly in the case of plane blades, but

07182022Issues keeping blade square
I agree with many that this guide has good quality and the attachment to set the proper length for a given sharpening angle is very helpful. However, I have had the issue with chisels sliding out of square and getting an uneven edge. With this issue I’ve gone back to using a much cheaper honing guide that clamps from the sides. Overall, disappointed with this product given the price.

01172022Best sharpening system yet.
Best sharpening system yet. I did 30 chisels and only 1 slipped it had a Dimond shape. I use a pair of players and carefully tightened it. It worked perfectly. I only did 1 planer blade but it worked perfectly. I highly recommend using plyers but only 1/8 turn . Don’t gorilla it down🤣

0672021Very disappointed…
Like some others have stated, the quality of craftsmanship is great, however, the design does not hold chisels firmly enough to prevent wandering and an inevitable off-squared edge/angle. At this cost, you should expect precision and repeatability (I purchased the deluxe set so my frustration of performance and cost is especially high). After hours of using this set for my plane irons and about 8-10 chisels, some new and others old and abused, I finally began to get a somewhat workable edge but that was due to going at an extremely slow pace and with constant fidgeting with the holding knobs. In my opinion, this set is garbage and there are many, cheaper honing guides that work better. Shame on Veritas, I would not recommend this to anyone.

01192021Poor design.
I have to agree with the last review. Nice quality but poor design.
Double Cherry chisels are tapered but the guide jaws are square, which leads to poor quality of sharpening .
Would have been better holding blade with my hands. I had to file the hone clamp to fit the chisels. -

11162020Veritas Honing Guide Mk. II
After several uses with the guide, the design doesn’t seem to be the best for consistent, reliable results. Because the guide clamps blades from the top and bottom and not from the sides, blades tend to shift as you are honing. After noticing this, I was very careful to align blades, check for square, and slowly and as evenly as possible make passes on the sharpening stones. This made the process of sharpening significantly slower. It increased the amount of work needed to get proper angles and sharpness. Even when you crank down on the thumb screws to get solid clamping pressure, the problem persists.
The reason for using a honing guide is for repeatable, consistent results. But with this guide, that doesn’t seem possible.
The quality of materials is excellent, and the options for honing angles and back bevels is a strong selling point. But the performance is lacking.Unfortunately, I can’t recommend this product.

1272015A Jig that acutally works
As soon as I got home with the MK II standard jig I went to work on a old Stanley No.7 and its Iron. The iron was absolutely dull chipped and in dire need of repair. I set up the Iron on the jig. The angle/alignment guide was simple to use and produced a square and correct angle with first time results. It took me about 20 minutes of honing starting at 220 grit to 2000. I could tell the edge was hollow ground most likely due to a grinding wheel because the iron was being sharpened on the edge and back of edge leaving the center untouched. Long story short, this jig straightened the blade and created a perfect 30 degree bevel and crazy sharp.

03192015Fantastic customer service
This is a follow up from my post two weeks ago. This guide is a solid, well made jig that does a exceptional job providing consistant and precise edges to your chisels and plane blades. My problem was the micro bevel feature resulted in skewed edges.
I notified Veritas of my problem and they immediately sent out a new guide, first testing to insure accuracy. I got it in 3 days and it’s dead on accurate. Further inspection of the two units shows the roller guide on the first very loose and sloppy.
Bottom line, great company, great products, great customer service. -

0312015Be adviced about micro bevel adjustment
Generally you can’t go wrong buying a Veritas tool but that being said, sometimes they don’t get everything right.
the MK2 is a solid honing tool that is well made and simple and accurate to use.
The problem with using cheap honing jigs is the setup to get consistant angles. You must attempt to set the cutting edge flat against a surface before securing the honing jig. Too many times I’ve ended up with another facet on the cutting edge because the setup was a fraction of a degree off.
The MK2 eliminates this problem with their setup design.
My complaint is in the micro bevel feature. While I love the simple turn of the knob feature, I’m disappointed in the results. I just sharpened a 1″ chisel that has a micro bevel ranging from 1mm to 2mm width, edge to edge. While i don’t expect machine edge results, I do expect more consistancy width from edge to edge.
For the price I paid, I expect better results from Vetitas. -

01122015Worth the money
This worked great. I finally broke loose and got some good chisels. I wanted to make sure I took the time to sharpen them. When you spend 200+ on a set of chisels you want them to be as sharp as you can get. This takes a little time to get it setup correctly. once you get that done its a breeze and is well engineered.

0912014Well Worth The Money
This is a well thought out/engineered tool. It is hefty, durable and easy to set up/use. The myriad of angles you can set with this guide is unbelievable. Its only con is a problem that is systemic to all honing guides that clamp from above and below: the ability to maintain the squareness of the tool in the guide. When using light pressure and easy strokes during honing and polishing this is not a problem. However, if you flat grind on coarse grit sand paper, like me, you have to check the squareness of the tool in the guide quite often — regardless of how tight you clamp the tool. This is because of the down pressure you must exert in order to get the coarse grit to grind efficiently. If you just go back and forth over the same path it might not be a problem. The skewing of the tool arises when you turn the assembly on the paper in order to use all of the available abrasive area. Otherwise it is a five star item!

07162013Absolute best
This is the best honing guide out there. It is quite expensive, that is true. However, as usual, you get what you pay for. This thing has a large roller wheel which helps keep your edge square to the stone. The set up seems complicated, but is actually very easy to use. It is fast. The weight is a big plus as it keeps everything stable and the edge on the stone. All of those are great features, but what I like best is that I can use this for my spokeshave and shoulder plane blades. The cheap and poorly engineered side clamping guides don’t allow this. This accommodates 1/4″ to 2-7/8″ and nearly 1/2″ thick blades. Made in Canada.
Buy it, you won’t regret it!

02262013A must have!
I’ve never been good at using chisels or planes. I finally figured out that these tools are not «sharp» out of the package and need honing. I invested in good Norton waterstones and learned the art of hand sharpening and honing. Effective but tedious and tiresome. I ran into a fellow in HD that recommended the Mark II. I took his advice and am absolutely sold! This jig is accurate and easy to use. The results are amazing and repeatable. The weight is a plus in my book. It is hefty and solidly built. Once you figure out the best way to hold it it is comfortable to use. I spent six hours sharpening all my chisels and plane blades and the results are amazing. Redressing a blade takes only a few minutes because the jig is dead on accurate. This is a must have. It is well worth the price.

If you have several chisels to sharpen, I would suggest wearing gloves to protect your hands. The numerous tightening and loosening of the knurl knobs can really chew into your thumb. But that aside, I would have given this tool 5 stars. I holds the angle perfectly, very easy to setup, and the micro-bevel feature is very nice.

11122012Great for western tools
I own a lot of sharpening equipment — stones, machines, etc. I use this guide and the skew jig for all my western chisels and plane blades — anything where the sides and faces are all parallel. If the sides aren’t parallel, the registration guide doesn’t work. If the front and back faces aren’t parallel, as in a Japanese plane blade, the clamp bar doesn’t hold that well. That said, this is my go-to guide for any plane or chisel wider than 1/8″.
The roller bearings do tend to get dirtied up with slurry grit if you use it on water stones. Oil and clean them often.

This is a high quality precision tool hands down. There’s no guess work. Check the angle of the blade to be sharpened, set the registration jig, insert blade to the stop, sharpen/hone to your liking and… perfect results everytime. 10142012You want sharp tools? Get this thing!
I doubt there’s much I can say that has not already been said in other reviews, so I won’t try. I’ll just give you the boots on the ground experience I had.
I practice the «Scary Sharp» method of sharpening plane irons and chisels with progressively finer grits of sandpaper. I have a no name honing jig that seemed to work OK, but I have been less than thrilled with the ability to create repeatable results. I don’t want to end up reworking a tool when I really just need a quick touch up.
After reading reviews for a power sharpening system I decided to give it a try. What a waste of time and money! I’m not writing this review to slam a competing product, just know that you owe it to yourself and your wallet to try the Mk II first.
After messing up a few chisels and plane blades I put the other previously mentioned product back in the box and decided to try the Mk II after watching some video reviews on youtube.
What a difference! This is one well thought out tool; The ergonomics are good, the fit and finish are great and once you spend two minutes learning how to use it you will kick yourself for not getting it sooner.
And did I mention sharp? I started with the worst of the chisels I had previously attempted to sharpen. After about 30 minutes I had one wickedly sharp chisel!
Thank you Veritas for making a great product. This is my first Veritas tool, but you can bet it won’t be my last.

I want a simple device that I can use with sandpaper, stone or whatever I have. I don’t want to have to do a set up. This works perfectly. Take it out of the tool box, grab an abrasive and in a minute the chisel or plane iron is ready to use.

01252010Well worth it
This thing is amazing. Solid, heavy-duty construction that feels good in your hand. The registration jig looks complicated at first, but use it once and you never have to refer to the instructions again. Comfortable to use. Makes a tedious chore easier, especially for a beginner!

12312009Great product. Easy to use
Simple to use, and lets you hone accurately. 1/4 inch chisel is difficult to register. The clamping bar doesn’t hold it down tight enough.

12292009Good Value
This thing works great. You have to be careful not to reach the index stop with the blade as it will nick your blade and cause you to have to do some extra honing.

1232009Works better than expected
First I sharpened an older chisel and it straightened the cutting end and gave it an excellant edge. Next I got a rather expensive block plane new and it came sharpened!! Well I put it on the sharpener and then found it was not sharpened nearly like it was when I was done. Also have done one plane blades and it works as advertised. Good investment.

11182009Gives consistant results.
Holds plane irons and chisels solidly.
The wide wheel does not allow you to follow the radius of scrub-plane irons.
The bulk of the jig makes it difficult (not impossible) to hone the back of the chisel/iron on the last lap to remove burr while still in the jig. -

11132009Masterfully Designed — Usual for Veritas
This tool is a honing guide to sharpen chisels and plane blades for woodworking. It seems to be a very good design, allowing one to hone a micro-bevel with just a turn of a know without changing the set up.

10272009A Must Have!!!
After years of «coming close» to the correct chisel angle and ensuring the blade is at a true 90 degrees when sharpening, finally, all the guess work is taken out. The alignment system is foolproof. As I resharpen my tools correctly, for the first time in years, the wonder and ease of working with hand tools has returned. A short, but very comprehensive tool guide gives all the information and help you would ever need.
